When a patient has one or more of the following symptoms, Dr. Gerald Hansen and Dr. Austin Braun may recommend a root canal in Reno, Nevada:

  • Severe toothache
  • Sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures
  • Darkening of a tooth
  • Swelling and pain in the gums
  • A pimple on the gums that will not go away.

Root canal therapy is the process by which our dentist removes infected dental pulp from a tooth. Dental pulp is the soft area in the center of a tooth where the veins, nerves, and connective tissues are located. Our dentist will remove the decayed material, bacteria, and debris from the tooth. The tooth is then cleaned and sealed.

If not removed, infected dental pulp can cause a variety of problems. The bacteria from the infection can spread, which can cause a pus-filled pocket called an abscess to form at the end of the tooth’s roots. Swelling can occur, possibly spreading to the face, neck, or head. Infected pulp can cause bone loss around the tip of the root. Drainage problems may arise, extending outward from the root. This can cause a hole to form through the side of the tooth with drainage into your gums or through your cheek into the skin.
