In order to achieve a strong and successful oral health, dentists today strongly recommend participating in a daily oral hygiene routine. While you are at home, use these three steps to clean your smile and avoid dental decay and infection:
1. Brush your teeth for two minutes every morning when you wake up and every night before you go to bed. While you brush, try to spend an equal amount of time cleaning each quadrant (approximately 30 seconds). Also, if it’s possible, thoroughly clean each tooth with fluoride toothpaste.
2. Floss your teeth at least once a day after you have brushed for two minutes. By flossing, the excess food that is stuck between your teeth is freed and your chances of having decay and infection are decreased. Use about 45 cm of floss and wrap each end around your pointer fingers. When you are ready, gently slide the floss between your two teeth. Rub the side of each tooth and move onto the next tooth once you are done.
3. After you have brushed and flossed your teeth, use a bacteria-killing or fluoride mouthwash to strengthen your teeth and gums. Sip a small amount on rinse into your mouth and swish it around for about 40 seconds. When the time is up, spit the liquid back into the sink.
